Middle Tennessee hosted Virginia Commonwealth at the Alumni Memorial Gym for MT’s last game of the regular season. A win over VCU could help the Raiders secure an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.
The opening set began with a VCU serve and the first point. The Raiders quickly tied the game and set the stage for a close match. The two teams battled neck and neck with the lead changing several times and the score was tied for the majority of the set. MT slowly pulled ahead in the end to a 24-21 lead. Oyinlola Oladinni scored the winning kill to end at 25-21.
The second set was close as well and tied several times but the Raiders were never behind VCU. Despite an MT lead, the Rams were able to tie the score late at 24-24. Middle Tennessee held on to win 27-25.
In what was to be the final set, VCU started with a bang and led MT for the first 12 points. The Raiders rallied back to tie at 12 and never looked back. The Raiders stayed in control for the rest of the match and ended with a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-19)win over Virginia Commonwealth.
Ashley Adams racked up 12 kills for MT. Oyinlola Oladinni and Maria Szivos scored 9 kills and Alyssa Wistrick stacked up 8 kills during the match.
Brynne Henderson and Maria Szivos led the Raiders in digs with 12 and 11 respectively.
This win boosted the Raiders to a regular season record of 21-11 and may help them make their sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
