Murfreesboro, TN ( 11/28)………The MTSU Lady’s basketball team defeated the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State 70-51 at Monte Hale Area on the Mufreesboro campus. They completed a 2-0 mini home stand having won first on Friday night. Tina Stewart led the women with 15 points while Dakota’s Krisin Rotert led all scorers with 18 hoops.
Stewart commented on the game. ” We played with pride and passion” she said.
Coach Rick Insell explained the early Middle lead as the key to the win. ” The first 10-12 minutes of the game was the whole key,” said the sixth year coach. ” I think the press surprised them.”
Sophomore guard Kortini Jones led the Lady Blue Raiders with 10 assists, a career high for the Oak Ridge High School grad. Ebony Rowe added 14 points, while Anne Marie Lanning and Elie would each have 12 points to put four players in double figures.
The Blue Raiders took a 35-22 lead into the locker room thanks to a layup basket by Elie Icelyn when they marched the length of the floor with only 05:3 seconds left until the buzzer.
South Dakota did not score until 10:23 remaining in the first half on a 3 point bucket. Middle would lead 21-3.
Rotert hit the deck hard and it took several minutes before she was able to walk off the court but she would return to play and be the leader for the Dakota team.
The Jackrabbits turned the ball over 38 times compared to 24 for Middle. The Ladys shot 45.1% compared to 40.5% for their opponents. Middle had seven 3 point baskets, four for Lanning and two for Stewart. Rotert had two for the Jackrabbits follwed by two for Jill Young and one for Megan Waytashek.
Losing coach Aaron Johnston said he tried to substitute different players once he fell so far behind in the game. He switched up the defense in an effort to cut into the huge Middle lead.
The Lady Raider’s held a 19-0 point lead at the 12:00 mark thanks to a 3 point basket by Stewart.
The entire squad for the Jackrabbits either hale from the state of South Dakota or Minnesota. Seven players list their hometowns in South Dakota and six are from Minnesota.
The Lady Raider’s next game is on December 1 against Tennessee Tech.
